Design Education

I’m currently attending the art institute in pursuit of a bachelors of fine arts with a concentration in interior design.  When I decided to attend The Art Institute I had a misunderstanding of what interior design was. I was under the impression everyone else was that I got to go shopping; putting fabrics on sofas and carpeting on floors. They day I started class my interpretation of interior design started to change and it has been ever sense. Now I know what interior design is and how much work it requires. I still have a passion for making things pretty like everyone else does, but now I know it’s not my main priority.
When I graduate from school, I plan on going to find a job under an interior designer and start accumulating my hours to take the NCIDQ.  Getting a job directly out of college has become a priority to me because I’m ready to start being a real person. I’m sure once opportunities present themselves I would love to further my education and go back, possibly even in another field. I’m constantly changing my mind and wanting to walk in a different direction, this time I’m completing what I started before the turn occurs.

  1. I like that you mentioned that you "have a passion for making things pretty".

It may sound silly, but I think that is the main reason why most of us actually pursued Interior Design.

It was only after I was well into this program that I actually learned how work intensive and detailed Interior Design really is.

  2. I think we all had that lingering thought of interior design being more decorative based. I am personally happy that isn't the case. What made you decide interior design was what you wanted to do?

  3. Hi Katie,

I responded to this post already! What happened to it?? Okay well, here I go again…

I can understand what you mean about not fully knowing what interior design fully entailed. After your first few days of classes- I’m sure you realized it wasn’t all about the shopping. You mentioned, “I was under the impression everyone else was that I got to go shopping; putting fabrics on sofas and carpeting on floors.” I’m just curious, are you interested more in residential? Or would you like to work on bigger commercial projects?

I think it is awesome that you will be studying for your NCIDQ. There is actually a girl at my job, who has worked as an Interior Designer for a few years now. She just signed up to take her NCIDQ this upcoming April. She was telling me that there are study groups to help prepare for it. You should look into that!

  4. Katie,
Your story on how you end up at Art Institute is interesting and I have some questions for you

1-Was interior design the first career choice you
    had?

2-What is the career that you started but never finished?

3-If there is something else in a different field why continue your education in interior design?
